Why install a tank foam?

With each turn, acceleration, braking, jump or bump, the gasoline present in the tank undergoes a sloshing which disrupts the behavior of the car. This movement of gasoline directly affects your driving by making the gasoline up to 3 times heavier than its real weight.

The sloshing of the fuel actually causes a lateral force movement that can destabilize your car, requiring you to compensate with the steering wheel. This movement of the fuel in the tank also results in a risk of under-gauging and therefore an entry of air into your fuel system.

Composed of a multitude of micro pores, the fuel tank foam will play a stabilizing role by preventing this movement of the fuel, thus improving the stability of your car and preventing it from planing. Its porous structure means that it only reduces the capacity of the tank very little.

Directions for use and precautions for use

The tank foam is specially designed and manufactured to prevent it from crumbling and releasing fine particles into the tank that could infiltrate your engine or clog the fuel system. Despite this, the lifespan of a foam is limited and it is advisable to renew it approximately every 5 years to avoid clogging the tank.

ATL strongly recommends inspecting the tank foam every 12 months and promptly replacing any softened, peeling or "gummy" foam.

In any case, after 5 years, it is strongly recommended to replace the foam with a new one.

FUEL COMPATIBILITY

- Most fuel system components are not resistant to all types of fuels. Therefore, it is essential to identify the intended fuel or mixture (gasoline, diesel, alcohol, etc.) before purchasing the equipment.

Foam baffle materials, in particular, are affected by alcohol, as are some fuel tank materials and components.

TYPE OF SAFETY FOAM

- Fuel tank foam is a "reticulated" or open-cell material that resembles a sponge.

When used inside a tank, foam helps prevent explosions, control fuel splashes, and absorb some of the impact energy. Foam should never be handled when wet with fuel as a surface fire could result.

ATL Yellow Foam is intended for hydrocarbon fuels, but can withstand reasonable exposure to homogeneous mixtures of hydrocarbons with 5% to 85% ethanol (ethyl alcohol) [ E5 à E85 ] .

For methanol, diesel and water, ATL suggests using Blue Foam . Any amount of alcohol in a fuel mixture will reduce the life and effectiveness of the safety foam.

ATL strongly recommends inspecting the tank foam every 12 months and promptly replacing any softened, peeling or "gummy" foam.

In any case, after 5 years, it is strongly recommended to replace the foam with a new one.

TEMPERATURE

- ATL racing tanks are deformable to prevent shocks and perforations.

Lower temperatures can limit the deformability and therefore reduce the efficiency of the tank. Most ATL racing fuel tanks are designed for normal racing environments of 0º to 50ºC (30ºF to 120ºF). Operation below -30ºC (-20ºF) may decrease performance. The maximum temperature for intermittent heat exposure is 60ºC (160ºF).

REMOVE THE FOAM

- All tanks must be purged and rendered inert before inspection, disassembly or storage. Use caution when removing foam as its pores retain approximately 2% of the fuel capacity. Once removed, the foam must be air dried and the tank cleaned.

The foam can be cleaned with water and reinstalled once dry or replaced with new one.

STORAGE

- When storing a tank, empty it completely, wash it with soap and water, dry the inside, close all openings and store it in a dark, warm, dry place.
