The MacPherson strut front suspension setup on VAG Group A5 platform cars (such as Golf 5, 6, Scirocco, A3, S3, Leon, Octavia) is a common design. Although it is a popular choice for manufacturers, due to its simplicity and low cost of manufacture, the standard design has a few drawbacks when it comes to high performance applications.
First of all, there is almost no freedom to be able to tune the geometry perfectly, which as we know from our racing program is absolutely essential for handling the A5 platform cars of the VAG Group.
The other disadvantage for high performance use is that since this arrangement tends to transmit road noise and vibrations directly into the body, manufacturers must add additional noise reduction and isolation mechanisms. In other words, a lot of movement in the original soft rubber bushing controlling the lower control arm.
