The rear suspension configuration on VAG Group's A5 platform cars (such as Golf 5, 6, Scirocco, A3, S3, Leon, Octavia) is a common design. Although it is a popular choice for manufacturers, due to its simplicity and low manufacturing cost, the standard design has some drawbacks when it comes to high-performance applications.
First of all, there is almost no freedom to be able to set the geometry perfectly, which, as we know from our racing program, is absolutely essential for handling the A5 platform cars from the VAG Group.
The other disadvantage for high performance use is that because this arrangement tends to transmit road noise and vibration directly into the bodywork, manufacturers must add additional noise reduction and isolation mechanisms. In other words, a lot of movement in the original soft rubber bushing controlling the lower control arm.
