What's the problem with a worn or torn driveshaft bearing?

The stock driveshaft center support bearing is designed to reduce NVH in the vehicle by holding the center bearing loosely with rubber enclaves that are quite fragile. During starts and gear changes, the driveshaft can move out of center, decreasing throttle response and causing oscillations in the transmission.
As it ages, the rubber in the bracket sags and dry rots, ruining the alignment of the driveshaft.
