Replacing the Hydraulic Tensioner and Camshaft Chain – 2.0 TFSI EA113

🔧 Detailed Steps with Illustrations

1. Preparation

Disconnect the battery, drain the oil, remove the covers and spark plugs to access the valve cover.

2. Removing the Valve Cover

Remove the Torx screws and take off the cover to reveal the camshafts and the tensioner.

3. Camshaft Locking and Timing

Set the engine to TDC on cylinder 1, lock the camshafts (VW tools), and secure the tensioner with the pin.

4. Locking the Hydraulic Tensioner

Compress and lock the tensioner using the proper tool to prevent sudden release.

5. Removing Chain and Tensioner

Unscrew the cam phaser bolt, remove the chain and the tensioner. Check for wear.

6. Installing New Parts

Install the new chain and tensioner. Tighten the cam phaser bolt to 50 Nm + 90°.

7. Refitting the Valve Cover

Fit a new gasket, tighten the cover progressively, and clean the contact surfaces.

8. Refill Oil & Final Testing

Refill with fresh oil (5W40 VW 502), replace the filter, start cold, and check camshaft timing (-6°/+6°).
